Crataegus monogyna
Category: Hedge and forest plants
A branched shrub or small tree with a broad, compact crown, reaching a height of 6 to 8 meters. It blooms from May to June with numerous single, white, fragrant flowers that attract bees and other insects. The lobed, deeply incised leaves are dark green and have a yellow to orange autumnal color. Red berries appear in autumn. Crataegus monogyna is known for its thorns and dense branching, making it a good choice for creating an impenetrable hedge. The plant thrives in a sunny to partially shaded location and requires little soil, as long as it is well-drained. Uses include hedges, mixed plantings, bird-friendly gardens, landscaping, and as a specimen plant. Crataegus monogyna is very winter-hardy. The berries are edible, although they have a mealy taste.
