Daucus carota

Category: Perennials — Wild Carrot

A perennial or biennial plant with an upright growth habit that can reach a height of 100 cm. A rosette of leaves forms in the first year, followed by stems in the second year. From June to September, it blooms with white, umbel-shaped flowers that attract bees and insects. Daucus carotus prefers a sunny location in well-drained, dry to moderately moist, nutrient-poor soil. It grows naturally in roadsides, dikes, and grasslands. It is ideal for wildflower meadows and organic gardens. The plant is very winter-hardy and highly resistant to diseases and pests. The root is edible and has medicinal uses. Wild carrot is not poisonous, but should not be confused with the very similar, but poisonous, species: spotted hemlock and water hemlock.
