Dianthus carthusianorum

Category: Perennials — Carthusian pink, Dianthus carthusia

A perennial plant with an upright growth habit that can reach a height of 30 to 50 cm. From June to September, clusters of purplish-pink flowers appear on slender stems. The flowers attract bees, butterflies, and other insects. Dianthus carthuisianorum prefers a sunny location in dry to moderately dry, calcareous soil. This plant is suitable for natural gardens, rock gardens, and natural flower meadows. It can also be used in borders or pots. The name carthuisianorum originates from the Carthusian monks who kept this plant in their gardens for its use as soap or for its saponins, which are anti-rheumatic properties. The plant is very winter-hardy and resistant to diseases and pests.
