Digitalis purpurea

Category: Perennials — Foxglove

This perennial plant has an upright, rosette-forming growth habit and can reach a height of 150 cm. A rosette of leaves forms in the first year, which develops stems in the second year. From June to September, it blooms with purplish-pink flowers with a characteristic speckled throat that resemble thimbles, hence the name. Digitalis purpurea prefers partial shade to sunny locations in well-drained, moist, acidic to neutral soil. The flowers of this plant attract bumblebees and honeybees, making it ideal for nature gardens and woodland gardens. The plant is very winter-hardy and fairly resistant to diseases and pests. Note: All parts of the plant are highly toxic to humans and animals. This plant is strongly discouraged in gardens where children play.
