Valeriana officinalis

Category: Herbs — Common valerian

This perennial plant grows with upright stems and can reach a height of 100 to 150 cm. From June to September, it blooms with light pink to white-pink flowers arranged in umbels. Valeriana officinalis is a good nectar and pollen source and will attract bees, butterflies, and other insects. It prefers a semi-shade to sunny location in moist soil. Valeriana officinalis is suitable for use as a standalone plant or in a border near a pond, as it makes a good waterside plant. The plant is very winter-hardy and fairly resistant to diseases and pests. The root of Valeriana officinalis is used medicinally as a sedative, sleep aid, or to reduce restlessness and anxiety. Large quantities can cause drowsiness. For some pets, such as cats, the scent of Valeriana officinalis has a euphoric effect.
